Firstly - thank you so much for visiting this site. My name is Jason Gaffney and you are very welcome. 

For most of my life I have been fascinated with football stadiums. Whenever I travel abroad (for business or leisure) I visit a football stadium. Any stadium. Recently I have tried to figure out ‘why I am drawn to them?’. And the best explanation I can give is this; every stadium carries with it an infinite number of human stories. 

When I look at any empty stadium - I see a sporting arena packed with stories. It’s as if the ghosts of the past are there; ex players, supporters, staff. In those moments I always try to imagine a night when tens / hundreds / thousands of people have cheered in ecstasy after a win. I also imagine what it would be like to leave the stadium in agony after a defeat - seeking solace from people you’ve shared the stands with all your life. What would a game of football look like in lashing rain? Under sunshine? Under the floodlights? In snow? Every stadium is unique. Every stadium has history. 

For people that support their local club the stadium is their church. For people that support the same club, but have to travel hundreds of miles to do so, a pilgrimage. In a time of war, pandemic and uncertainty - stadiums represent a constant. A certainty that, no matter how tough life gets, you have that Saturday afternoon to keep you going; public transport, pre match drinks, game programme, seeing friends & family, idolising your hero’s on the pitch, singing when you’re a goal up, singing when you’re a goal down, half time food, ticket stub in your pocket, the smell of the grass, sound of the ball, floodlights, hope. The deep rooted belief that ‘this’ is where you are welcome. This is where you belong.

As for this website - I wish to share my stories and wish, even more, to hear yours. Maybe my experiences at these grounds will inspire you to plan a trip yourself.
